Senior research scientist selected

NATICK, Mass. -- The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center's Natick Soldier Center has a new senior scientist. Dr. Claire C. Gordon was appointed the coveted position of senior research scientist (Biological Anthropology) on Aug. 11 and is the only female among the 33 Army senior scientists.

Senior scientists divide their time between conducting research in their specialties and serving the Department of Defense as scientific reviewers, program advisors, and mentors of young scientists and engineers.

She has been a research anthropologist at the Natick Soldier Center since 1983, and between 1986-1988 was principal investigator of the U.S. Army Anthropometric Survey, which is still the world's most comprehensive anthropometric database. In addition to conducting research in population modeling and anthropometric sizing, Gordon has served as Natick's Anthropology team leader, Behavioral Sciences division chief, and acting director of the Science and Technology Directorate.

On the national and international level, Gordon currently chairs the American National Standards Institute and International Standards Organization Committees on Anthropometry, and she is a past chair of the Air Standardization Coordinating Committee on Aviation Anthropometry.

She holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame (1976), master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees in biological anthropology from Northwestern University (1977, 1982), and a master of science degree in biostatistics from the Harvard School of Public Health (1990).

Gordon and her family are residents of Sutton, Mass. She is the daughter of Catherine Tigner Gordon and the late Dr. Robert E. Gordon of LaGrange, Ga.

The Soldier Systems Center is part of the U.S. Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command (SBCCOM). For more information about SBCCOM or the Soldier Systems Center, please visit our website at http://www.sbccom.army.mil.
